Bluewater Grad Wins California Derby
Sunday, January 17, 2016

J. Paul Reddam's Frank Conversation, a Bluewater Sales grad from Fasig-Tipton's October Sale, showed his impressive turn-of-foot in winning the $100,000 California Derby on Saturday, January 16th.

Trained by Doug O'Neill and piloted by Mario Gutierrez, who, along with Reddam, were the team behind Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion I'll Have Another, Frank Conversation got a stalking trip through the early fractions. He was asked for more by Gutierrez six furlongs in and had plenty to give, mowing down rivals to cross the wire 2-1/2 lengths in front.

The son of Quality Road was a troubled fifth last time out in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity. He is graded stakes-placed, with a strong showing in the Cecil B. Del Mille S. after breaking his maiden at Santa Anita last fall.

Bred in Kentucky by Marc Keller and raised at Catherine Parke's Valkyre Stud, Frank Conversation was a $65,000 purchase by Red Wings out of the Bluewater Sales consignment. He then went onto be a $120,000 purchase by Denis O'Neill for the Reddams out of the Wavetree Sales consignment at the OBS March Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale.

Frank Conversation has earned $110,450 and has a current record of 5-2-0-1.
