Bluewater Grad has Connections Derby Dreamin'
Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Gary and Mary West's Malibu Sunset kept his perfect record in tact when he cruised to an easy win under a hand ride in a 1 mile allowance at Santa Anita on Saturday, February 28.

The Bernardini colt, who was previously conditioned by Wayne Catalano, broke his maiden at first asking by 10-1/2 lengths at the Fair Grounds. He was making his first start for trainer Bob Baffert in California.

Out of the Storm Cat mare One Stormy Mama, Malibu Sunset was a $240,000 yearling purchased by Ben Glass on behalf of the Wests at the Keeneland September Sale in 2014. He is a half brother to Grade 2 winner Thunder Moccasin, by A. P. Warrior.

While Malibu Sunset is not currently Triple Crown nominated, the Wests have until late March to decide whether to nominate him for a fee of $6,000. His earnings in two lifetime starts is $58,800.
