Bluewater Ends Sale Season with Successful November Sales
Saturday, November 20, 2021

It was another successful November sales season for Bluewater with high dollar horses at both the Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland November Sales.

Fasig-Tipton November set off the fireworks when Bluewater sold all but one of the horses it offered for a 90 percent clearance rate.

Bluewater’s offerings were led by last year’s Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Vequist being snapped up by Spendthrift for $3.4 million. Also the second highest price of the sale for a Racing/Broodmare Prospect and fifth highest overall, the filly was Bluewater’s last offering of the night.

Bluewater yearling graduate Valiance had gone on to win a Grade 1 in her racing career and returned to the consignment to sell as a Broodmare Prospect at Fasig-Tipton. She again proved to be a hit when JS Company purchased her for $3 million to join the Japanese broodmare ranks. JS Company also purchased the fourth most expensive offering from Bluewater with Laura’s Light at $650,000.

Dual Group 1 winner and world traveler Queen Supreme is boarding another international flight after Kia Ora Stud purchased her to send to Australia for $900,000. The Exceed And Excel mare was born in Ireland, raced in South Africa for most of her career then shipped to England in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup before making her final start in the Filly and Mare Turf before the sale.

In all, Bluewater’s nine hips sold at Fasig-Tipton averaged $1,021,111 with a median of $475,000, both well above the sale average and median. Bluewater’s gross of $9.19 million was also fourth best of all consignors.

Switching to Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale the following afternoon, Bluewater offered 65 horses over the 10 sessions for an in-ring clearance rate of 80 percent.

The group was led by the multiple stakes winner Spanish Loveaffair, who both won another stakes and placed in a Grade 3 for Eclipse Thoroughbreds, Gary Barber, an Michael Hernon after the catalog was released. Also a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Spanish Queen, Spanish Loveaffair sold for $775,000 to Lael Stable with Doug Cauthen signing the ticket.

Stonestreet Thoroughbreds added Grade 3 winner Two Sixty to their broodmare band in Book 2 when they purchased her for $440,000. Out of a half-sister to three stakes winners, Two Sixty is carrying her first foal by Constitution.

Pop a Choc was a session topper for the Bluewater team when she sold to Clear Ridge Stables for $265,000 in the sixth session. By highly sought after broodmare sire Bernardini, the Broodmare/Racing Prospect is a winning half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Airoforce. The earner of $117,385, Pop a Choc comes from a proven producing family with each of the dams on her page producing stakes performers.

Bluewater’s gross of $6,252,500 for 52 sold was the seventh best of any consignor with under 100 horses sold at Keeneland November with all but one of the consignors above Bluewater selling at least eight more horses. Bluewater also averaged $120,240, the third best of consignors with 50 or more sold at the sale. Bluewater also had the best average and third highest gross of the sixth session and the fourth highest gross of the final session with 10 less on offer than the three above it.

In all, Bluewater sold 61 of the 75 horses offered between the two sales for a clearance rate of 81.33% and a gross of $15,442,500.

At the end of the sales season, Bluewater sits eighth among all sales consignors this year by gross for all sales. Bluewater's 2021 ends with an 83.07 percent clearance rate from 189 offered.
