Bluewater Grad Malibu Sunset Romps in Fair Grounds Debut
Monday, February 1, 2016

Malibu Sunset, who was sold by Bluewater Sales at the 2014 Keeneland September Sale for breeder Mike Abraham, romped in his career debut at Fair Grounds on Sunday, January 31, winning under wraps by 10-1/2 lengths. The colt is Kentucky Derby nominated.

By Bernardini, Malibu Sunset was always a standout, RNA-ing for $190,000 with a different consignor as a weanling at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Taken home to mature, he was re-offered to the public market, this time under the Bluewater banner, at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and brought a final bid of $240,000 from Ben Glass, agent for Gary and Mary West.

The Wayne Catalano trainee is out of the winning mare One Stormy Mama, an Overbrook homebred, who was purchased by Mike Abraham at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton November Sale for a mere $23,000. She is a half sister to stakes winner Wicked Diva and foaled a full brother to Malibu Sunset in 2015 and is in-foal to Medaglia d'Oro.

Malibu Sunset posted opening quarter of 22.06 and, by the half mile pole was beginning to pull away from the field. Ridden by Florent Geroux, he continued to pull away, geared down in the stretch more than 10 lengths ahead of the second place finisher.
